​I've learned through the years that beyond everything else, when people like you hire a coach, two things matter most:

  • First, you simply want to know if you and the coach will be a good fit. Will the coach "get" you (and likely your team and your family) enough for your relationship to be both easy and challenging? Will there be a depth of trust and interaction sufficient for you to fully explore your life, your challenges and your next steps?
  • And second, you want to know if your coach will help you to clarify and actively pursue the goals and outcomes you set. Will there be a clear ROI? Will there be some big learning?

Why professional coaching has become so useful for veteran leaders and their teams.

​Sometimes it seems like this is how most professional development happens.

In contrast, I think of coaching as highly customized and collaborative, just-in-time adult learning. It is designed to leverage a client's strengths, experience, assets, aptitudes, desires and ambitions for key outcomes. That's a mouthful, but every word is part of the process.

Most leaders don't expect me to have done their job, but they do expect my informed curiosity about their sector, my understanding of human change and of organizational behavior. These are the areas I tend to focus on with individual clients:
  1. Coaching and counseling for personal development including self-improvement and communication
  2. Personal change management: Identifying and taking your best next steps personally/professionally
  3. Helping leaders to become better facilitators with groups and teams--Including the option of a Coaching for Leaders Program.
Not surprisingly, the people who get the most out of coaching budget extra time to reflect, experiment, learn and enjoy the process.
