Sometimes
the call from a manager, small business owner or church leader comes
during a
time of
important transition and change. Sometimes the request is simply to
raise the level of his or her
team's effectiveness and communication.
Whether it's a half-day
introduction, or a two-day conference, I combine consulting and
coaching
with teams in an experiential setting, on-site or off.
With teams and groups
I take the same future-oriented, “whole-life” approach as I do with
coaching
individuals. Here is the process I keep in mind as I meet with
the team's leader and then tailor-make
the workshop:
Step I. I start with the
assumption that everyone on the team wants to be more clear about a few
things:
1.
"How do I approach incoming information?
2.
"What are my natural tendencies, skills and gifts? And is there
resilience in my
style—particularly
in times when the pressure is on?
3.
"Other than money, how do I like to be compensated?
4.
"How can I better balance my work with my personal life?
5.
"How can I make the time to stay fit, healthy and full of energy?
6.
"How am I able to have a sense of meaning through it all? And ideally,
7.
"How can my manager and team best support me?"
Step II.
I use a variety of
assessments.
With
teams, I select an appropriate assessment, and ask each member to
complete it
prior to the workshop date. This is all done virtually, with the
results coming back to each individual and to me as the facilitator.
Step III.
At the team
workshop.
Then,
once we're together, I
spend the first part of our team time in "consultant mode," talking
about team effectivness, reviewing the meaning of the assessment,
talking about various personal styles and how each one has the
potential to make your team more effective.
Then
I slip into
"coaching mode," inviting each team member to talk about his or her
results—with clarifying questions both from me and from other team
members.
Armed
with new
insight, teams spend the
balance of the time in experiential learning. I design exercises that
will further clarify the various learning and work styles on
the team. This becomes a time where teams discover new ways to enjoy,
laugh and be effective in working together.
Step IV.
Follow-up.
In
subsequent coaching and consulting meetings, with managers, team
members and whole teams, I use the "test and learn" approach. Your team
members will be trying new things, individually and together, and
continued periodic coaching--individually and in groups--is a
valuable follow-up.
With
a background in coaching, consulting and theology, I conduct workshops
for a variety of work groups, including days designed for Clergy and
Congregational leaders. Click here
